msconfig is a little-known gem of a utility. I use it once in a while and I keep forgetting what it's called so I'll make a note of it here for reference. The most useful feature in this program is under the Startup tab. There, you can temporarily disable startup items. It works on both startup items from the registry and startup items from the startup folder. And best of all, you may not need to install anything. If you have Windows 98, 98SE, ME, XP or 2003, it's already there. However, if you have Windows NT or 2000, Startup Control Panel is a good substitute.
