The Nickel Mine

Received a Property Tax Rebate check in the mail, only about 4 months after I filed state taxes. Not that much since I'm just renting but it's something.

Also got a piece of junk mail from Stamps.com. They're offering $80 worth of stuff for signing up, but I checked their website and their monthly service fee is $15.99! So, no thanks. I think that's really only worth the expense for businesses or other organizations that do bulk mailings so this mail offer has been poorly targeted.

Went out to hit the Nickel Mine geocache this evening. Access to this one is pretty tough so I'm not surprised to be only the second maniac to attempt this even though the cache has been out for more than a week already. Basically, the route choice is between a woods road that's so overgrown that you can hardly see it most of the way, or a bushwhack/climb straight up the mountain. I picked the latter since it is the shorter way and I was told by the cache owner at the Harriman picnic that the woods road wouldn't be any easier.

It was a hot and humid day. I thought it would be cooler in the woods and it was, but not cool enough. By the time I reached the mine, I looked like someone had poured a bucket of water on me. Good thing I brought a bottle of drinking water on this hike.

Some pictures of the nickel mine...Collapse )
