America by the numbers - No. 1?

So as not to make Galileo turn over in his grave, I won't dwell on the significant percentage of Americans who think that the Sun orbits the Earth. More disconcerting, however, is this item:

* Our workers are so ignorant and lack so many basic skills that American businesses spend $30 billion a year on remedial training (NYT, Dec. 12, 2004).

Is that what spending thousands of dollars on education every year per student gets us? We can call major corporations greedy for outsourcing and offshoring their operations, but that kind of protest sounds rather hollow when you consider that they aren't getting competent workers in the first place.
