The three geocaches in the Edgewood Preserve were placed in conjunction with last weekend's CITO event. I went for them today. At the first Edgewood cache, I saw that they'd left a pack of garbage bags. So I took one. I figured I could help by picking up the odd bottle or can that they missed. That turned out to be an understatement. Somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd cache there, I came across the motherlode of garbage: lots of cans, bottles, and beer boxes all in one area. Had I not examined the dates on some of those items, I'd have concluded that some people came in and trashed up that spot in a beer party. However, the garbage had been deposited there over a period of 5 years! There and then, I was able to fill up the garbage bag.
Anyway, I was glad to be able to do my part in making the preserve a little better, instead of just complaining, as I usually do, about inconsiderate morons who litter and ruin the parks for everyone, although I'll probably get back to the complaining later. :)
Historical Note: The Edgewood Preserve used to be the Edgewood State Hospital, a mental asylum, before the DEC took over the land. I got that link from a bumper sticker someone left in the parking area.
