Crosswalks

Do you stop for pedestrians in crosswalks? In New Jersey, it's the law, but sadly, it appears that motorists who do stop are the exception rather than the rule.

I had personal experience of that this evening. I was crossing the road at a crosswalk, nearly but not quite at the halfway point. There was a lady driving an SUV heading towards the crosswalk. She was driving slowly and I thought she was about to stop. Suddenly, she sped up and cut in front of me.

That's not an isolated incident. I've seen it happen countless times. I don't know of anyone who has gotten a ticket for failing to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. In fact, even the police don't always stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. They should have crosswalk markings in designer colors because if everyone's going to ignore those, they might as well be decorative.
