To put things in perspective: This The Big Picture blog entry is a bit dated but it includes a chart showing inflation-adjusted gas prices from the peak in the early 80s to this year. Adjusted for inflation, the peak in 1981 was $3.07. According to GasBuddy, the nationwide average is about $2.89 and rising. So we're almost there! (Indeed, you may already be seeing prices higher than $3.07 at some gas stations.) Given that unleaded gasoline futures were up another 14 cents today, I think we can easily reach a new all-time high.
