In between errands this afternoon, I stopped at Boston Market in Mahwah for lunch. Had a coupon, of course. However, the cashier said it wouldn't work. He tried the coupon code anyway and the system rejected it. At the time, I wasn't interested in hearing the explanation so I asked him to cancel the order. Then I left Boston Market and went to Quiznos in Ramsey. Of course, I now know that I got tripped up by the fine print on the coupon, which excludes the lunch combos. Here's the problem, and I'm not even sure the BM folks realize this: They try so hard to get my business only to slap me with a technicality in the last minute. In this area, BM is second only to Quiznos in terms of the number of coupons issued. Generally, it is bad marketing to say "no" to a customer. So what I think they should've done is structure their prices so that they turn a profit even if you use the coupon. By doing so, they can take advantage of price segmentation, i.e. they make a little more money from regular, sane people who don't bother with coupons, and a little less money, but still something, from discount nuts. In that way, they can carve out more profits from the consumer surplus curve than they otherwise could if everyone paid the exact same price.
Anyway, while at Quiznos, I made an interesting discovery. Usually, I don't bring the notebook computer into the restaurant, but today I did because I didn't want to leave it in the car, where it could get overheated or stolen. (not that the crime rate in Ramsey is even worth mentioning, but you can't be too careful) Since I had the computer, I checked for a wi-fi signal and to my surprise, there was an unsecured network with a very strong signal in downtown Ramsey! So I used the web a little over lunch and that was a nice bonus.
In the evening, I went to the Cindy's Pool geocache. It's by the Ramapo River in Oakland/Mahwah at the entrance road leading to Camp Glen Gray. For some reason, even though it's a river, that spot is called Cindy's Pool, according to a sign on a tree. Anyway, it was an easy cache. Didn't get FTF this time though because another geocacher was there 20 minutes earlier.
After that, I went to Moe's in Mahwah for another go at Monday's special. (buy one burrito get one free) This time, I had the Art Vandalay, which is their vegetarian burrito. I figured without the meat, those wouldn't fill me up too much, and indeed, one and a half Art Vandalays was just about right. I saved half a burrito for breakfast tomorrow.
