Friday, and Flash Floods that I never saw

Belmont Hill County Park

It rained heavily last night and it was still raining in the morning. I checked the traffic alerts at Yahoo! Maps and Traffic.com, and I noticed that there were about half a dozen roads in this county closed because of flash floods. Those road closures were mostly in and around Lodi, so I was wondering if I would be able to get to the Cache With A View geocache. This one is in Belmont Hill County Park. While the location is in Garfield, it is close enough to some of the road closures to be affected by traffic delays.

Well, I didn't have to worry. I went for that geocache in the evening. By that time, the rain had stopped for a few hours. Traffic was flowing smoothly and there was not a sign of the flood anywhere along my route. So it was an easy drive up and find. After that, I went for Memorial Park II Cache in Nutley. It's not the cache that is "II", but the park. Presumably, the first Memorial Park is somewhere else in town. Anyway, this too was pretty easy as walking directions were provided in the cache description. Not that I couldn't have figured out that I needed to use the bridge instead of hopping over the 10-foot wide stream, but you never know!

I knew that wasn't the end of the story, so I flipped open the cell phone and used Opera Mini to do a search for nearby benchmarks. Benchmark KV6828 was less than a mile down the road and supposedly very easy to access, so I went there and it was indeed in the parking area of a little league field and clearly marked in pink paint.

After that, I felt mission accomplishy, so I went back to Paramus for dinner and to take another peek at the CompUSA clearance sale. Came home and saw that my area was shrouded in dense fog. Interesting.
