Still on leave and had nothing planned for the next few days. Then I noticed last night that motel room rates in Newark, DE, are now actually lower than last week. It's counterintuitive because I thought more people would be traveling closer to Christmas Day. Anyway, I went for it. Made the reservation late last night and now I'm in Newark. Now that I'm actually here, I see that the motel is hurting for guests. Only a few rooms are occupied. Cheap and not crowded. Sweet.
This time, I went down to Delaware via Philadelphia so that I could pick up a bunch of geocaches in Northeast Philly that were listed since my last trip to NE Philly. (that ill-fated deer collision trip) Despite the rain today, it went better than I thought. I also made a short side-trip to 5 Mile Woods to finish the set of caches there that I'd been meaning to do but never had time for before.
One dark side of Newark is lawlessness. At the strip mall just down the road from the motel, I noticed that the fire lane was full of parked cars. That happened even though it was clearly a No Parking area and even though there was a notice posted there saying that police visit the area twice a day and will ticket every car in the fire lane. Sure, it was raining but I didn't mind walking the extra 100 feet myself. Anyway, for dinner tonight, I decided against the restaurant and just picked up food at the Wawa store at the 2/4/72 intersection.
