Parenting by proxy

Has this ever happened to you? Let's say you're at a restaurant. A mother is at a nearby table with a misbehaving child who is being loud or overactive. She makes every attempt to get her child to behave, and finally she snaps, "Be quiet. Sit down. That man's looking at you."

And then you think... Whoa, now wait a second! I'm not annoyed or mad at your kid. How did I become a part of your parenting?

I guess I find that a bit creepy since my parents used that tactic a lot.

And yeah, the first time that happens, you know you're getting old enough to be that man. :)
